Why is protein important?

There are many food sources containing protein fit for a dog! Meat is the obvious one but also certain oilseeds (such as Soya) some grains and eggs are a good source too.  Protein is an essential part of your dog’s diet as it ensures that their body can function properly.

What is protein needed for?

Well, protein is required for the formation of new skin cells, helps with hair growth, maintaining and building muscle and other soft tissue to mention but a few. It also plays a key role in creating hormones and enzymes which in turn are needed for otherfunctions within the body. Last but not least, it provides energy along with ensuring that the immune system stays strong and healthy.

Your dog’s body can’t store protein in the same ways as it can with fat or other nutrients, this means that it needs to be a daily part of their diet. The need for protein during your dog’s life will vary; as a pregnant or lactating animal their needs are much higher due to their body’s demands during the growth and development phases.  The same will apply to the pups once they are born.

All of this makes it vitally important that your dog food contains sufficient levels of protein.  However, just having a high percentage of protein in the food doesn’t always mean that your dog is receiving a better quality food. The key is how digestible the proteins are within that recipe.

Here’s the good news!  Websters Grain Free recipes contain freshly prepared meats (all sourced in the UK) that are gently cooked at 90 degrees Celsius. This gentle cooking process protects the nutrients therefore allowing your dog to have optimal nutrient bio-availability! Gently cooking the food means nutrients, such as proteins, stay intact rather than them being denatured as when subjected to extremely high cooking temperatures. This means more proteins are readily available and can be easily digested resulting in less waste.
